Let's Fly Bloghop: A New Year celebratory 3-day extravaganza!

So here we are! Welcome to a New Year and getting off to a flying start with a superb Let's Fly themed 'Blog hop'!

My name is Gill Eggleston for those of you who may not know of me. I work under the name Pattern Addict as a textile, surface pattern designer and illustrator.

On the back of compiling The Little White Book of Surface Pattern Designers, which launched on Monday; I was given the honour of taking pole position for the blog hop.

POLITE NOTE: SHOULD YOU FIND ANY BROKEN LINKS EN ROUTE TO THE NEXT BLOG PLEASE CLICK THE BLOG PARTICIPANT LIST ABOVE TO LOCATE THE NEXT BLOG TO VISIT- THE DESIGNER WILL BE MOST APPRECIATIVE THAT YOU TOOK THE TIME.

After your visit here, you will then be lead on (via a link at the bottom) to the second blogpost - that of MaJo: MaJo has also been responsible for creating the 'Let's Fly' butterfly logo for the bloghop that you can see to the right of the page - so here is a little 'thank you' to MaJo for her time spent doing that for us all. The bloghop will be closed by Lisa Rivas.

Everyone who is taking part in the blog hop is working to the same Let's Fly brief, kindly created by Rosie-Dekker-Martinez of Believe Creative Studio.

The theme is about how all the designers and bloggers taking part today are on their first journey/flight into new careers as surface pattern designers. As part of this theme and in celebration of 2013 we are also all incorporating the Pantone colour of the year - Emerald 17-5641 TCX into our collections.

As a start point for my design I found a lovely mood board on the Pantone site - whilst I drew a little inspiration for colour combination for my 'Let's Fly' collection, I have tweaked it a little but it does

Energise mood board courtesy of Pantone.com
gives some idea as to how flexible this particular emerald green tone actually is.
In addition, I was quite intrigued to see how closely it related to the gemstone itself in tone...

Looking at the above beautiful, cut emeralds above it is quite a close match!!

Anyhow, onto the design brief of  'Let's Fly'.....and Pantone 17-5641 TCX Emerald.

This brief had me thinking about my current situation and how I might reflect that within a design for my blog post. The resulting design is now the 'hero' of a collection called "Quirky Bird - learning to fly" in a new design style that I have been working on just recently and haven't made widely public until now -I hope it comes over as I wanted it to be: fun, illustrative and even more exciting for me with 'watercolour' effects! Au revoir flat colour...

As a result of my new found passion for watercolour effects I will be undertaking a massive overhaul of my website in the coming weeks, although I have added a few new designs in the last few days.
So this 'quirky bird' who is 'learning to fly' represents me and my ever-evolving ambitions (both creatively and personally): so let's just say I am currently in pre-flight mode (the fasten seat belts signs are on) but I am not quite off the ground yet plus, there is an odd bit of flapping going on here and there on which direction to set off in; something that I am sure anyone in the same position has experienced or is experiencing!

Whilst I am (and always will be) a textile designer with a mad passion for colour, pattern and fabrics, I am more than keen to move further into illustrative design, therefore, one of my major goals for this year is to seriously start creating and licensing collections of illustrative designs. (Et Voila! I have put it there now so now I have to start to put some plans in motion).

So, on a final note and moreover, keeping the momentum going regarding the new emerald colour, I found this image of unrefined emerald from a Colombian mine (Muzo) - which is the place for emerald mining from what I gather - isn't it glorious!? What a colour!
And there you have it, a nifty, yet, tenuous link between 'emerald' and the next blog on from here: that of Maria Jose Bautista V who is a vibrant Colombian designer living in Europe...
So before you leave, I will say thank you for calling in to have a look and wish you every success.

Gill, OMG, what can I say that is not obvious? The birds are stunning, obvious. The watercolour and "handmade" feeling is remarkable, obvious. The palette you chose is eye catching, obvious. So on and so for. The english is a gem and the writing style reveals a talented writer as well. Shall I add obvious too?
Sorry for reapeating myself. You're a talent resourceful generous fellow. Thank you for all the efforts on making our precious white first stone and for help us fly.
Besos.

The Quirky bird theme is terrific and you're giving me a new appreciation for emerald green, a color I tend to avoid. It will be a pleasure to continue on and meet the other designers as well. Best of luck with your website redesign and future plans.

Great designs, and fab post. The process is also one we use in our designs, mixing CAD, hand drawn & painted to create unusual textures. Much better than flat colour. Love the fact you're experimenting with it too!

Is blog hop only open to graduates of the Surface Pattern Design course? As we'd be interested in entering...Thanks Harriet @ Decorque

Hi Harriet, this blog hop concludes officially today, although the posts remain linked up. There is going to be a future event I am sure and it is not ABSPD exclusive. We are part of an international group on Facebook so perhaps there is a way you can join in for future activities. Best, Gill.

Harriet Stevens said...

Thanks for replying Gill. The blog hop idea is great, and we love the fact it is International. We'd love to participate in a future event that is not ABSPD specific. How could we join the group of Facebook?

Thanks Harriet
