Introducing GUKUUKI Studio - Print Design

Gukuuki Studio (Gukuuki)

I first came across Gloria, the perceptive and innovative creative director of Gukuuki Studio, on Linkedin quite some time ago.

She had posted a query about how to texture map onto bedding and I had fairly recently fathomed out (via a contact of mine) the best method, so was able to offer some help.

Subsequently, we had a long chat via Skype over a ‘virtual cappucino’, about all sorts of design- related things and have kept in touch ever since.

Whilst Gloria hails from Spain, she now lives in the UK (so no where near her much sought after beautiful place by the sea! so instead ‘enjoys’ the inclement British weather.

Stating her favourite season as Spring "because that is when everything starts to flourish" Gloria is no doubt inspired by nature around her.

She has a background in graphic design, in addition to fashion print and produces some lovely placement designs for t-shirts for her own collection sold via Society6.

More recently Gloria has started to develop designs for home-furnishings having undertaken some exciting projects recently- below is an example of one of bedlinen creations.

Gloria was a senior in-house designer for Pepe Jeans London for some years. During this time she was responsible for creating prints, twice yearly, for Ladies and Junior collections. The experience of this fast-moving fashion environment has meant Gloria learned a lot; which comes over very clearly when you engage with her and see her work. Below is one her most successful and popular prints 'Fantasy Trees' from her time there.

Working with ink and watercolour plus including her fascination with Japanese and Scandinavian design styles, Gloria produces some colourful and bold design creations – both geometric and floral. She uses lots of bright colours including orange in the design process; which she states as her favourite colour, so much so it is even used it in her studio logo design.

In her daily life, Gloria is greatly inspired by her grand parents, family and friends but looks outwards at Gustav Klimt, Alfons Mucha and the very much celebrated Tricia Guild for design influences.

Barbara Hulanicki and Terence Conran have also captured her attention as influential design forces.

In fact, her work exudes a lot of flair, energy and positivity, which makes up her vibrant personality.

Just for fun I asked her what other creature she would like to be if she could choose and it just happens to be my own favourite - a dragonfly: “as they are stylish and can fly!”

Well Gloria, I think 2013 is the year for you to fly high.”

If you fancy knowing where Gloria also looks for inspiration she has kindly supplied her top 3 favourite blogs:
